Stuck just going through the motions (or working with someone who is)?
Sometimes the simplest stories can provide inspiration, like the story of the three bricklayers.
When asked what they were doing, the first bricklayer replied, “I’m laying bricks,” the second said, “I’m building a wall,” but the third declared, “I’m building a cathedral.”
When we’re focused solely on the immediate tasks, we’re working like the first bricklayer.
When we follow the steps mechanically, checking all the boxes, that’s the blueprint of the second bricklayer.
But going through the motions, isn’t enough.
Like the third bricklayer, we need to see the cathedral, not just the bricks. This helps us transform everyday efforts into extraordinary outcomes.
Here are a few takeaways for getting unstuck:
- Envision the Cathedral: Always keep the bigger picture in mind, not just the task at hand. This vision guides your strategy and inspires deeper engagement.
- Align and Multiply: Remember, the performance equation (thinking + feeling + behaving = results) isn’t just about adding thinking, feeling, and behaving; it’s about multiplying them to maximize their impact.
- Check for Zeros: Ensure there are no zeros in your equation. A lapse in any component—whether it’s thinking, feeling, or behaving—can undermine your entire effort.
A small change in approach can mean the difference between feeling stuck and breaking through to achieve remarkable results.
Let’s aim to build cathedrals in all we do!
