How to Use the Performance Equation with Clients and Employees

I’d like to share with you a transformative approach that has been adapted from cognitive behavioral therapy: the Performance Equation. This simple formula—Thinking + Feeling + Behaving = Results—is designed to help individuals break free from the constraints that get in their way.

Why is this important?

  • Identify Blocks: Quickly pinpoint where clients/employees are stuck, whether in their thoughts, emotions, or behaviors.
  • Tailor Solutions: Use this clarity to develop specific interventions that address these blocks effectively.
  • Drive Results: By aligning thoughts, emotions, and actions, clients/employees can achieve outstanding outcomes.

Applicability: The Performance Equation is versatile and can be used across all areas of life, ensuring that you have an effective tool that is applicable in various scenarios—be it personal, professional, or relational.

Action Steps:

  • Assess: Encourage them to evaluate their current thinking, feeling, and behaving in relation to their goals.
  • Identify Gaps: Look for zeros in any part of the equation and address these specifically.
  • Implement Changes: Apply targeted strategies to fill these gaps and move towards desired results.

Stay Accountable: Remember, accountability enhances performance. Encourage them to hold themselves accountable or partner with them to keep track of their progress.

By integrating the Performance Equation into your coaching toolbox, you will be better able to guide clients and employees through the challenges efficiently.

Give it a try the next time you’re working with someone who is stuck and see how it works for you.
